Exploring Salvation Mountain and Slab City: A Colorful Desert Adventure

Sometimes the best adventures happen when you set out to visit friends and end up discovering something unforgettable. That’s exactly what happened to us in early March, when a weekend trip to the Fountain of Youth RV Resort led to an unexpected journey through the colorful world of Salvation Mountain California and the free-spirited community of Slab City, California.

Relaxing at Fountain of Youth RV Resort

In early March, we decided to go visit friends at the Fountain of Youth RV Resort in Niland, CA, for the weekend. The drive from Lake Havasu State Park was beautiful, with wide-open desert landscapes giving way to the unique scenery of the Salton Sea area.

Our stay at the Fountain of Youth RV Resort was a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. We spent our days soaking in the mineral-rich hot tubs, letting the warm waters melt away any travel fatigue. Evenings were filled with good company and laughter as we enjoyed meals together.

But the real adventure began when we decided to explore two iconic sites just down the road—Salvation Mountain and Slab City.

Salvation Mountain: A Monument of Faith and Color

Salvation Mountain California is a massive, colorful hillside tribute to faith, created by Leonard Knight over several decades. Located just outside Niland, California, it’s made of adobe, straw, and thousands of gallons of paint. The vibrant murals, Bible verses, and phrases like “God is Love” make it one of the most iconic desert art installations in Southern California.

Walking up the painted paths, we marveled at the bright colors and intricate designs. It was clear that this was a true labor of love—a message of hope crafted in the middle of the desert. We spent time exploring the different sections, each offering something unique—whether it was a beautifully painted flower, a heartfelt message, or a burst of color against the blue sky.

Slab City: The Last Free Place in America

Just a few miles down the road, we found ourselves in Slab City, California—often called “The Last Free Place in America.” Once a military base, the area is now an off-grid community of artists, nomads, and free spirits who have made the desert their home.

We wandered through this eclectic space, where every turn revealed something new—colorful murals on abandoned buildings, quirky sculptures, and even a makeshift library. Slab City is a place where freedom, creativity, and self-expression thrive without limits.

Reflecting on Our Visit

Our trip to the Fountain of Youth RV Resort, Salvation Mountain, and Slab City was a reminder of how diverse and surprising the desert can be. From soaking in the warm, mineral-rich waters to exploring vibrant art installations and witnessing a community that thrives on independence, it was an adventure we won’t soon forget.
